[Culture] Do you want to live forever?

I didn’t even know this was in the works. I’m always up for more Conan. Too bad we can’t get Arnold to take off his suit/tie and get back on the set again. Though, after Conan the Destroyer, maybe he shouldn’t. But was that really his fault?

Perlman is nailed down for ‘Conan’
Ron Perlman has signed on to voice Conan of Cimmeria for Swordplay Entertainment’s "Conan: Red Nails," the first animated film featuring the mythic barbarian. Marg Helgenberger and James Marsden also are joining the voice cast, which includes Clancy Brown, Cree Summer and Mark Hamill. The film will be directed by Victor Dal Chele, with a screenplay by Steve Gold and Timothy Dolan.

[Culture] Take me out to the black

As of 10/11, FireFlyFans.net is reporting that Serenity has only grossed $18m so far. That’s far short of the reported $80m need for a sequel. So this guy has the right idea:

Bits ‘n’ Pieces: Movie fan purchased 320 tickets to give out

Who was he?

A man said he bought 320 tickets to "Serenity" and on Sept. 30 stood in front of Regal Cinema Cascade 16 theater and gave them away.

It could have been a crazy promotion by Universal Pictures. Or maybe he was just a crazed fan willing to drain his savings account for the love of a movie.

[Culture] You can’t take the sky from me

Vividas uses a interesting technology which delivers full screen previews rather than the Quicktime or  Windows Media previews that we’re used to seeing for movies. The problem is that it suffers from a lack of quality because it is running full screen. They have to balance the size of the download against that quality, and in this case the quality suffers. I’d rather watch an in-browser Quicktime preview at a higher quality with a smaller screen. If I really wanted the full-screen experience, I’d just save the clip and full-screen the player. Someday it will get there, just not yet.

serenity.jpgHowever, while I might be bashing my expected quality, I certainly can’t bash their content. They’ve got a preview of the first 9 minutes of Serenity (via TheMovieBlog.com). I’ve seen the movie, but I figured the first 9 minutes could keep me happy until I saw it again. Maybe it can be used to tease those of you who haven’t gotten to the theater yet, and won’t this weekend either.

[Culture] Take my love, take my land

Hey did you guys know that there was a Firefly Wiki? Might be helpful to those of you just getting into the series.

So I’m reading one of my webcomics, Real Life, this morning and guess what I run across..

Orson Scott Card reviews Serenity. Yeah - the dude who wrote Ender’s Game, Ender’s Shadow, and a whole bunch of other books you should have read. (I’m still partial to “Pastwatch", myself.) Card is, in my estimation, one of the foremost authorities on Sci-Fi, and the things he has to say about Serenity are eye-opening. DAMN. :) Kind of made me sit here smiling the whole time. So, that’s sexy.

I liked the article. It’s nice to see an author’s take on a movie, as they’ll have a totally different approach on how to deconstruct it.

[Culture] TWiT on Serenity

Here’s part of the transcript from last weeks TwiT (episode 25). I think it sums things up nicely. This portion is around the 9 minute mark and worth listening to in it’s entirety. Check out This Week in Tech.

Ok, how many of you have seen Serenity?

Am I the only one who’s seen it?

Pat is the only Twit who’s seen it.

What’d ya think?

I thought it was awesome.
[snip]
In fact, I think George Lucas should go out and just fall on his sword.

He should just like, walk out it front of his house and go “Wow. 8 dollars and a recycled television program and they just smacked me how many millions of dollars.
[snip]
I just want him to take his can of gasoline, sit in the middle of the Presiddio in front of all that beautiful lush land he wasted to move ILM closer to where people want to live. He should light his ass on fire and apologize.
[snip]
So do you all agree that Serenity was the greatest movie ever? Better than Star Wars?

[Culture] I have a brown coat

Yup, just like (hopefully) everyone else, I got a chance to see Serenity this weekend. We made plans two weeks ago, with my father’s girlfriend offering to watch the twins for us so that we could go. Having turned my father onto the Firefly series, he really wanted to see it as well.

So they came over Sunday afternoon and we left Janice with Connor and Alia and then the three of us headed out to the movies, returning afterwards to a nice pot of rigatoni and meatballs.

It was the first time in 11 weeks that we’ve left the kids with someone for a non-medical reason, and it was a bit scary and exilherating at the same time. I must admit that I was a bad father and only thought of my kids once during the movie. I was thinking about them before it started, checked my watch once during, and then immediately afterwards. While we like to stay for the credits, we wanted to get home and make sure Janice wasn’t totally overwhelmed.

So I guess I need to keep this spoiler free like everyone else is. At least for a week or so, and then you’re on your own.

I can, however, talk about what makes the movie great — Joss Whedon. Fans of Firefly agree that the dialog is awesome. Those of us who were Buffy the Vampire fans already knew this. For years we tried to get you guys to watch Buffy and told you about how great the writing and dialog was. Many of you didn’t believe us. Maybe now you’ll be a bit more inclined to watch a few episodes and give it a chance.

The dialog is well-written and extremely well timed. It was a hallmark of the TV show and carries right through to the movie. Jayne’s responses (in both mediums) are some of favorite. There is a great juxtaposition of a strong-independent-nothing-hurts-me-mercenary and the little-scared-kid.

The other thing that makes the series great is the characters themselves. In Serenity, the characters get shot, stabbed, and have the shit beat of them. Why? Because the Universe isn’t a pleasant place. Life is harsh. Heroes aren’t perfect. It’s that level of characterization that makes you root for them as the underdogs. The cookie-cutter, knight in white armor hero gets old quickly. Here, our heroes are thieves. There’s a sort of Robin Hood -esq feeling to what they do, especially whenever they butt heads with the Alliance, who we all know is the true bad guy. :)

Mal seems to lose more fights than he wins, but that doesn’t keep him from fighting. His conviction, whether the right one or the wrong one, gives the character depth… and that in turn allows us to connect with him. And then ultimately, it makes the characters and the universe that much more believable.

There are plenty of things that I want to talk about which I can’t, because of spoilers. But I will certainly take the chance to talk to you guys in person about them. I’ve already had several in depth discussions on the movie, and it’s great to hear what others think. My friend Jason probably summed it up best when he said, “My first thought when I left the theater was, someone at Fox is going to lose their job.” Absolutely. Too bad they didn’t lose it sooner.

Oh by the way… [info]kitzani uses this as one of (her?) avatars. I saw it in a comment thread on [info]joyeuse13’s blog. I don’t mind telling you that my comment reply was "That avatar is just wrong. I went to a very bad place and I wasn’t too eager to return."

[Culture] Ok, one more for the road…

From Evil Avatar

Looks like that dunce Dunst accidently spilled the characters.

Quote:
While doing press for her forthcoming release Elizabethtown, actress Kirsten Dunst may have finally let the proverbial cat out of the bag about the oft-speculated identities of the villains in Spider-Man 3.

Dunst is quoted at Zap2It as saying, "We have really great people though as the villains in this film, Thomas Haden Church and Topher Grace — Venom and Sandman." She added, "Maybe I wasn’t supposed to say that."

Ok, say what you will about blondes. Their stupidity can often be our fortune. As if I wasn’t going to see Spiderman 3 anyway. This is just a nice little tidbit that alot of folks were looking for confirmation on.

[Movies] I’m Buck Melanoma

Buck Russell: [Staring at it] I’m Buck Melanoma. Moley Russell’s wart. Not her wart. Not her wart! I’m… I’m the wart. She’s my tumor. My… my growth. My… uh, my pimple. I’m Uncle Wart. Just old Buck "Wart" Russell. That’s what they call me, or Melanoma Head. They’ll call me that. "Melanoma Head’s coming." I’m s… uncle! Maisy Russell’s uncle!

Uncle Buck is one of those movies that whenever it’s on TV, you sit down and watch it. For years it’s been that way. One day, I managed to catch it on HBO instead of TNT. Suddenly I realized how much I’d been missing from the original, because of all the edits. Edits for time, and more importantly, edits for content. A well placed “shit” in a movie can really be a nice comedic hook. It’s the way people talk.

So I added it to our recent Netflix queue, and just got it a few days ago. Laughed my ass off the entire time. There’s a scene early on with  Macaulay Culkin in which he discuss dog balls with his uncle. I’d forgotten that scene actually existed.

Did John Hughes just retire to spend all his money, or did he fall in a ditch and die somewhere?

Review: Still 4 stars after all these years.
