This CRT on my lap is heavy..

I’ve been meaning to write about Improv Everywhere for quite some time now, so I guess there is no better time than the present.

Improv Everywhere is, at its core, about having fun. We’re big believers in “organized fun”. In the process we bring excitement to otherwise unexciting locales and give strangers a story they can tell for the rest of their lives. We’re out to prove that a prank doesn’t have to involve humiliation or embarrassment; it can simply be about making someone laugh, smile, or stop to notice the world around them.

Sometimes their missions involve lots of people and sometimes just a few.

They first caught my attention when I read about their Best Buy visit in April 2006. Folks showed up at Best Buy dressed in blue shirts.

The idea for this mission was submitted by a stranger via email. Agent Slavinsky wrote in to suggest I get either a large group of people in blue polo shirts and khakis to enter a Best Buy or a group in red polo shirts and khakis to enter a Target. Wearing clothing almost identical to the store’s uniform, the agents would not claim to work at the store but would be friendly and helpful if anyone had a question.

Most recently, their Mobile Desktop adventure made me laugh. The geeky ones really draw me in.

For our latest mission, three agents entered a Starbucks one by one with their own giant desktop computer and CRT monitor. They bought coffee and worked at their computers as if they were laptops. One computer even had a Wi-Fi card installed, enabling our agent to surf the web.

I was at a Starbucks recently picking up a Chai. I don’t stop there regularly (probably because the local one is a pain in the ass to get to by car on the wrong side of the road), but I had a gift card I’d received for doing some friend-based computer support. Sure enough, in my 3 visits to empty the card there was always at least one person with a laptop sitting there and working.

You should also read up on the MP3 Experiment (they have actually done 4 of them now). It’s a great creative idea that has a very unique experience for those involved. Everyone gets an MP3 track ahead of time (they are not allowed to listen to it). When they get together, they all start the track on their portable players at the same time. It’s a combination of music, simon says, and other activities to get the crowd to interact with each other based on ‘timing’ everything just right — and knowing that people won’t be in sync.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of my other non-geek favorites though. Red Heads.

For our latest mission, over 50 redheads rode the subway together and protested a Manhattan Wendy’s for their “racist logo.”

The visual impact of that one with them all on the subway and the poor chap who walks into their car totally oblivious is funny as well. Dunno why that’s my kind of humour, but it is.

Hey Murray, being the actor/geek/writer that you are, I would think this kind of thing would be right up your alley — and close enough to get involved in.

Gump for President

When you decide that you’re going to start a new company and you chose a name, and then go ahead and spent the time and effort and money to design a logo and get ready to do mailings and all the parts of a new ‘launch’, at what point in the process do you actually check to see if the name was already in use?

If you say in the beginning, you’d be wrong. The actual answer is after. When you go to register the domain name - of all things. Find out not only is it in use, but it’s in use in the same state. Hrm.

Pinocchi-nose

Found via kottke.org, this is a wonderful article about

A student fondly remembers his lying economics professor whose highly effective teaching technique involved a Lie of the Day in each of his lectures.

Take a few minutes to read through the article. Then next time someone tells you that all lies are bad, you can explain how they can be used for good. His technique is a really unique and inspirational way to get students involved.

Gen Con Files Chapter 11

So what does the bankruptcy mean for the world’s oldest gaming convention? According to the company’s press release, the show’s still on for 2008. But still, not an encouraging sign for the gaming world.

I haven’t been in a few years since the kids were born, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t planning on going back!

Cupid Sucks

So I wanted to do something a little different this Valentine’s Day. I’ve been wanting to do a puzzle adventure with Ravenchase Adventures for quite some time. Scheduling being what it is, we’ve missed several opportunities. However, I realized that they were holding a Valentine’s theme event in Philadelphia on Saturday, and I decided that we needed to make room in our schedule to sign up.

So I surprised Jean with the tickets. Well, not really surprised, since part of the scheduling included getting a baby sitter and coordinating not going to other events that weekend, so I kinda had to spoil the surprise a little earlier than yesterday.

Ravenchase has a variety of kinds of adventures, and this is going to be an outside walking one. The weather today is incredible, and I wish it would be 50 degrees tomorrow. More likely, it’s going to be mid 30s. So we’ll just make sure to bundle up.

We got our first clue last night! The way they start their adventures is that they send you the first clue to decipher, and it contains the location where you are supposed to meet.

The clue was setup to use 3 different ciphers: Vigenère, Caesar, and a Polybius.

I’m happy to report that we successfully  decoded the clues (in about 25 minutes) and know where we are supposed to start.

The Polybius one was actually the hardest because we didn’t follow the clue exactly, and wound up filling the grid incorrectly. Once we reread it a few times, we were on our way.

It’s funny, because when we solved the Caesar one, which should have been the easiest as a simple ROT cipher, the first word didn’t make any sense. Luckily we chose to decrypt the entire thing because it was so short and realized that the rest of the plaintext *did* make sense. In the end, we determined that the problem in the beginning was really a error in the encrypting, and when I contacted the coordinators they confirmed that for us. (it was one letter wrong, but it was an abbreviation, so it wasn’t obvious)

It’s a shame that the opening puzzle had an error in it, but I’m confident that the rest of the puzzles will work as expected. I just want to make sure I’m not second guessing our answers on Saturday thinking there is an error with the puzzle.

If you want to learn more about cryptography, there is a very good set of articles on Topics in Cryptography on Wikipedia.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to the game tomorrow. Our team, Team Celtic Lovers, has done our mental calisthenics and we’re ready to rock and roll!

Walk him along, John

Siobhan and I were talking at fencing last night about Great Big Sea and our music collections. She mentioned going to see them in concert, but I didn’t get the feeling that she meant *this show*:

Great Big Presale - Atlantic City, NJ

The GreatBigSea.com Store currently has a presale running for the boys’ Atlantic City, NJ show on March 14. Get your tickets before they’re gone!

That was posted to their news feed, but the link seemed to be unavailable when I followed it, so you’re own your own to find out more about the concert.

I suggested two other groups to her that she hadn’t heard of and were a bit more Celtic Rockish. They are Dust Rhinos and Barleyjuice, the latter being a local Philly group and a new-found favorite of our friends the Brooks’, based on my recommendation. Give them both a listen.

What started our conversation that night though, was that I told Siobhan I had come across a good resource for drinking songs and sea shanties. Thanks to Boing Boing, I found these two sites (check the BB link for additional resources)

http://www.drinkingsongs.net/ 1600-2000 (check the links on the left for additional books/manuscripts)

http://www.arrr.net/shanties/

I was particularly drawn to the drinking songs site because of the copies of manuscripts, several of which are in the early 1600s.
