[Personal] The plural of vortex is vortices

Irregular pluralization of the (American) English language is something that has to drive our ‘tired, poor, huddled masses’ mad when trying to learn to speak it.

I just had the need to pluralize analysis. For the life of me, I couldn’t remember if it was one of those singular/plural same words like species, or if it was an is/es switch. Luckily, the wonders of the internets led me to Joanna Crump’s Webpage on English Grammar and I was able to get proper confirmation.

Injoke –> Yes. Internet is not pluralized. It’s a ‘Bushism’ that was apropos to this entry. Did I really need to tell you that? I’m afraid I would have to, as some people just don’t get it.

[Geek] Words, words..

I’ve seen typography movies befores. That is to day, a movie which is simply animated words, rather than images (though I guess technically when the words are animated and delivered via a movie they should be considered images — but you get my drift).

In any case, I ran across this today (via Boing Boing) and I really enjoyed watching it, so I thought I’d share it with you.

It’s NSFW.

SCAD student Jarratt Moody is in Time-based Typography I here at SCAD (a course for which I’m currently the teaching assistant), and he recently finished up a really nice piece for the first project in the class. The basic idea of the project is to take a piece of audio from wherever (movie, song, poetry reading, answering machine) and then represent that audio on screen using only typography.

[Family] And then she/he said RALPH

Farside

So I’ve had quite the time the last few days dealing with a very sick family. At one point yesterday, not only did I have Connor, Alia and Jean throwing up, but the dog too. I took a sick day, not because I was sick, but to deal with the ensuing madness.

If you can’t make jokes about vomit, then having to deal with an exorcist baby should never be in your future.

And the funny part of the day goes like this. Connor was sleeping, but he wakes up and starts getting all squirrley on the couch. I knew that he was going to hurl, so I quickly grabbed the paper towels and lo and behold.. blammo. Now I was feeling pretty good about myself. I’d already changed clothes 3 times so far the day, and gone through two towels. So Jean wakes up when she hears him get sick, and I start telling her my story about  how proud I was that I knew Connor was going to be sick, and to look for ‘the signs’. Connor had his head resting on my chest at that point, and then immediately proceeded to BLAMMO on me. Not once, but twice.

Jean: “Pride cometh before the fall”
Me: “Yeah. Thanks. I guess I deserved that huh?”

Change of clothes #4, and then put a towel directly on my chest when he was laying there for the rest of the night.

[Odd] I’ve heard of spanking your monkey.

The Internet has some wonderful stumble-apons. Sometimes, there are just some *weird* ones.

When Kevin Rose himself says “best digg ever” you’ve got to check it out. This cat spanking video is hilarious. The cat actually seems to be really enjoying him/herself.

[Geek] Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us

Now that I’ve got my computer at work updated, and I managed to go through the thousands of back blog entries (I skipped a few just in case you were wondering), it’s time to post again.. I realized it had been almost two months since I was actively writing.. Holidays will do that to you.

I’ve also noticed that alot of my recent entries have video links in them, which is reflected nicely in this video:

Michael Wesch, Asst. Professor of Cultural Anthropology, Kansas State University
{Video}Web 2.0 … The Machine is Us/ing Us

It’s more than just a buzz word. It’s really a change in the way we communicate and share our lives with each other.

Professor Wesch is involved with a program called Digital Ethnography at KSU. Ethnography is defined as: A branch of anthropology that studies and describes modern human cultures (rather than human behavior or physical attributes). Archaeologists sometimes work with ethnographers in an effort to correlate behavior with material remains.. What they are studying is how the web and the digital medium is defining our current international community. As the Web becomes part of our daily lives, our culture is no longer defined by the physical borders of our towns and countries.
Pretty cool, if you ask me.

[Geek] Well Said Mr. Turkey Neck

So I didn’t watch most of the Superbowl yesterday. I’ve only been tuning in to watch the commericals the last few years anyhow.. I always find myself with something better to do. This year, I was playing Ranbow Six: Las Vegas. I did manage to catch a few commericials though.

If you haven’t, you can check them out at http://youtube.com/superbowl. You can vote and rank them, so you’ll see what other people like as well.. I really liked the Career Builder ‘jungle’ series. However, the FedEx one about FedEx Ground (currently #27 on the list), was the one that really made me laugh out loud.

[Personal] Blog Update

So I updated my blog to Wordpress 2.1 from 2.03. Not much has changed on the front end, just mostly on the backend. It also means I had to go through and take a look at my plugins, because they don’t always work when you upgrade.

The first thing to always break is my LJ crossposting.. This time was no exception. I’ve been using the LJXP plugin since the last upgrade I did. However, it’s not working with the 2.1 release. I used to use Live+Press, but that development stopped with 1.5.2.

I got lucky however, and found a link to a non-supported v1.99 release of Live+Press that was altered by an end user. It’s actually working properly. I did some test posts before and then deleted them.

Damn I’m loopy.. it’s 1:07am.. I need to go the ef to bed… my contacts are scratching into my brain…

I did have to make a few changes to the code myself. I didn’t want the format to change again (on the LJ side), so I altered the PHP to make the header appear the same as it used to in LJXP. That meant moving it before the post and changing its output. I wish Live+Press was better documented and had cleaner code. It looks like a real kludge with abandoned functions and stuff. LJXP appears to be better written, he’s just not committed to making it work updated either. **sigh**. The good news is that I get to use moods and LJ user tags again. The bad news is that it’s now a two step process. The Live+Press crossposting options don’t show up on my initial authoring.. So I have to save it as a draft, then open it, and then publish it if I want to crosspost it.. I also gotta remember to disable the comments each time.. maybe I’ll just hack the code again to always disable them so I don’t forget.
