[Geek] True Love is but a +2 Broadsword away

In the vein of Dr. Demento’s “Dungeons and Dragons (“I attack the darkness), there is this really funny video called, Fear of Girls by YNG Turk Films. It runs for about 11 mins, so give yourself time to watch it.

With all the Mountain Dew cans in the gaming room, as well as the casting of Magic Missile during their Larp session, you really have to believe that not only was the writer aware of the Dr. Demento version, but that it’s an homage.

I see this link making its away around through the gamers. It’s that viscious circle of making fun of the stereotype and realizing that the majority of gamers are not like that, but at the same time knowing just enough of them that are.

[Gaming] I’m in need of a dodecahedronal sheet

This is a great website for creating your own graph paper. Just pick the kind you want, enter all the parameters and get the result as a PDF. What’s cleaner than that? Now the next time my zombie hordes attack you, you can be sure that they know the size of the room more accurately.

[Personal] I expect more of you next time, Jeremy

Last week, my friend Jeremy ([info]ianraven) blogged about his son’s Cub pack’s Pinewood Derby race. It sounds like they had a really good time, Dad and son working together to build the car.

However, these guys did it up one step better…they attached a wireless camera to record the race and make it look like a jet engine.

Now, Jeremy is a bit of a techno-geek. So I certainly don’t expect him to take that lying down. Next year I expect better. If you can’t find a way to attach something electronic to Kovey’s car, you’re not half the geek I thought you were.

[Odd] I Want One

A Cyclops Kitten — Unfortunately it only lived one day

Now, if I can only get Dr. Hwang Woo Suk to clone me one, we’d be all set.

[Geek] WFM Vulnerability

You may or may not be aware that in the last week a major vulnerability was exposed for Microsoft Windows. I’m not going to go into the finer details but I will give you this summary:
1) It affects all versions of Windows (so it’s not something new)
2) Can expose your computer to hackers/spyware/viruses etc. without any interaction from you at all. You simply go to the website, or open the picture through IM or whatever, and BLAMMO, you’re infected.

As of yesterday, there were already 57 known viruses using this exploit. More followed.

At first, Microsoft wasn’t going to have it’s patch ready until next Tuesday. That would be a full 14 days after the exploit was discovered. I was originally going to write this blog entry and tell you to install an alternate patch to protect your systems in the meantime.

However, as of about 1 hour ago, Microsoft has released the patch early (breaking their monthly patch cycle) because of the significance of the problem.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE run Windows Update on your machines as soon as possible and get yourself patched. Even if you have your automatic updates turned on, don’t wait for this one.

I’ve had first hand interaction with this bugger and it’s not pretty. Trust me. Install it now. Reboot your computer and be safe. Hopefully you haven’t already gotten your PC all whacked out in the meantime.
